FAQ
How long will it take me to complete my training and gain the PADI Divemaster certification?
The time it will take you to complete your training depends mostly on your certification level when you arrive: if you arrive as a Rescue Diver, your internship will last 4 weeks, if you arrive as Advanced Open Water certified, your internship will last 6 weeks, if you arrive as Open Water, or with no certification your internship will last 8 fun-filled weeks.
Are there any prerequisites? What are they?
There are just a few prerequisites:
You must be at least 18 years of age, in good physical condition (click here for medical form) You will also need a minimum of 40 logged dives to begin the Divemaster course, if you don’t have quite that many yet, don’t despair, you can catch up once you’re here at a very reduce rate.
You must be at least 18 years of age, in good physical condition.
What does a typical day look like?
Every day is different, however most days will have some time in the water, either on a boat or shore dive, or assisting on courses. Additional time will be in a classroom. Sometimes the classroom is under the Palapa, sometimes on the beach and sometimes at a bar or restaurant. There will also be some days to yourself, and some group activities. Each day will be as much fun as you make it.
How much diving will I be doing?
Blue Magic is the ONLY internship program that does NOT limit your boat dives. If you have nothing scheduled, you are free to join one of our daily boat dives (if space is available). Remember, we have three boats, so there is (almost) always space for you!
What equipment do I need?
All SCUBA gear is included in the cost of your internship. Of course, if you have your own gear, you will be more comfortable. For comfort, we do recommend that you have your own Mask, fins & snorkel and a shorty wetsuit, but we have plenty to lend.
Once you start your Divemaster portion of the training you PADI requires that you have a timing device, a pocket mask and two signaling devices.
What else do I need to bring to Cozumel?
Whatever you need for comfort. Normal dress is shorts and T-shirts, no need to bring many changes of clothes.
What other expenses should I expect?
Our Divemaster internship program provides everything you need except food and personal expenses. Most people find that US$100 per week is enough for food and entertainment, your mileage may vary.
Tell me more about the free accommodation that’s included.
A shared room with (usually) just one other same gender intern, in-suite bathroom, hi-speed broadband WiFi, sheets and pillow, a shared kitchen, swimming pool and a huge common area with garden, hammocks and a large screen TV. All this at the Blue Magic Hostel.
What if I prefer someplace else?
We believe that staying together is the best weay to encourage teamwork and group learning, however we also understand that some of our interns prefer more privacy or have other requirements. There are many short term or vacation rentals here in Cozumel, from Luxury to budget.
Will I have any days to myself?
Yes, you will have days off to yourself in addition to the group social events.
Aside from the Divemaster course, I want to learn a specialty or two. Does Blue Magic offer any? And at what cost?
Blue Magic is a PADI 5 Star IDC center and we offer many, many specialties, including Nitrox, Wreck, Deep and others. As DM Candidates we offer special discounts. Check with your instructor about specific course prices.
Now that I’m a divemaster, how do I become an Instructor?
Easy, join our IDC (Instructor Development Course) that we hold 4 times a year.
I don’t have dive insurance yet, how do I sign up?
We recommend DAN (Divers Alert network) insurance.
What is the electrical power?
Just like the USA and Canada we use 110 Volts
